She’s forced to start over in the middle of the summer, but is used to it by now, since she’s moved around her entire life. When Kate meets Rico and Adriana on her second day at the beach house, everything changes. Kate is introduced to the world of Light and Darkness, and is thrown into the middle of it when a mysterious being attacks her one night. As Kate’s nights continue to get weirder, her friendship with Rico and Adriana grows stronger, and for the first time Kate has real friends. This book gave me a different review of human/demon interaction. It was like it took old age 'possession' and mixed it with a modern day life. In this book, Jamie Loek, makes her demons the kind that can possess people.Kate is a teenager who moves to a small seaside town with her parents after they get a new job. On one of the first days she's there she meets Rico and Adriana and is thrown into a world where any moment she could lose her body and soul to a demon who would kill her when he gave it up.
I have to admit that when I first started reading this book, I had to wonder if I was going to finish it. The writing just seemed...awkward and didn't flow as well as I thought it should have. The story line was alright though, and I wanted to find out more about what was going to happen. I think what kept me going was that it did seem to improve as I continued on. I won't say it was the most brilliant writing I have ever seen because, if I did, I'd be lying.
The characters were okay. Kate suffered from her mother never really having anything to do with her. Added to that was the fact that her mother was in denial over her actions as well. Donovan was the best character in the book, I think, although Adriana was a close second. I thought Donovan struggled the most with what he was. What he did at the end of the book was unexpected, but it was the part I loved most about the book.
Kate and Rico didn't stand out in the book for me. There was a lot more that could have been done with those characters to make me connect more with them. Their back story could have been developed better. I only got glimpses into their past lives. I was told that Rico and the others had done terrible things, but I didn't feel like they had. I've read some books that have made me feel the character's pain and this book didn't do that. Well, actually, I take some of that back. There was a part at the end of the book that touched me more than the whole book did. It was just sad that there wasn't that level of emotion throughout the whole book.
And, I really liked the way Jamie represented Light and Darkness. It was a really unique twist on it and it gains extra points from me.
Even though this book had some really good parts - the writing style, the lack of character development, and the feeling that I was being told the same thing over and over again spoiled the book for me.
I don't know who I would recommend this book to. I guess anyone who likes Angels/Demons would like to give it a shot.

Body and Soul The Chronicles of Light and Darkness Book 1 eBook Jamie Loeak Stacy Loeak Mara Biggs Reviews
This book would be very good for teens who struggle with inferencing. Every single thought the characters have is spelled out, and there's nothing left to the imagination, which is a shame as that is an area with which many students struggle. There are many missed opportunities for this author, as she glosses over events and actions that could help to fill out the characters in the story.
For example
"After hanging out with Rico and Adriana for the past couple days, finding out stressful news and getting attacked by strange demons, Kate was happy to be alone."
Loeak, Jamie. Body and Soul (The Chronicles of Light and Darkness Book 1) (p. 100). Jamie Loeak. Edition.
"In Kate’s mind, she had it all figured out. She would offer the man a cool glass of sweet tea and a few cookies. Once she got him relaxed and comfortable, she would begin asking him questions. Good cop, bad cop style interrogation; well, mostly good cop."

Throughout dinner, they joked and laughed, enjoying their time together now that Kate was home. Both of her parents decided to take off work for a couple days. They decided that the three of them would hang out at their beach house and travel somewhere when Kate felt a little better. Kate insisted that she felt better already, but she was still sleeping twelve hours each night so her parents decided that they would wait a day or two."

You may have noticed that the author loves to use the main character's name. In this 240 page book, she uses it a total of 2,195 times! (Thank you, , for the x-ray ability.)
I found the story line to be an interesting premise, but shallow. The main character is told a fantastic story by a near stranger, and she believes it in a heartbeat, without any proof. It's highly unlikely. I couldn't connect with any of the characters in the book. The dialogue was stilted, and uncomfortable; the characters' actions were unrealistic.
The ending is a mess of dramatic actions, and for someone who touts having a soul and experiencing love as the be-all-end-all, the main character barely reacts when she experiences a huge personal loss, choosing instead to make out with her man. Horrible.
This book contained multiple grammatical errors and needed to be better edited. It was just disappointing and difficult to complete. While it is not the worst book I've ever read, I do not recommend this book.
