Lost in Barbarian Space A Phoenix Adventures Scifi Romance eBook Anna Hackett
Series: Phoenix Adventures #9--One Sentence Summary--
Solider Honor Brandell must work with Warrior Colm Mal Kor to visit one of Markaria's moons in search of a crashed ship from long ago.
--What are the Issues--
Honor is used to men finding her intimidating or not thinking she's feminine enough because of her height, strength, and work as a solider. Knowing that Markaria is a low-tech, barbarian world has her convinced that she'll be treated with less respect just because she's a woman. Colm has been keeping a dark secret his whole life and he's desperate to never fall in love. His father suffered from "nanami sickness" and could no longer control himself to the point that he abused Colm and his mother and eventually killed his mother. Colm knows this sickness is often hereditary and will do anything to maintain his ultimate control.
--What I Liked and Didn’t Liked--
A Barbarian World -- Once again, our book takes place on the newly found planet of Markaria which we were first introduced to in On a Barbarian World. This wasn't my favorite setting because, like I mentioned in the prior book's review, it embraces the possessive, he-man attitude of more historical times. I felt Colm was much more dominant than Kavon in how he treated Honor. He still respected her strength and was definitely attracted to her appearance, but he was very much an alpha-male. This book also took us to one of Markaria's moons but it wasn't much different than the danger of Markaria other than all the snow.
Soldier Girls -- Anna Hackett always does a good job of creating strong, female characters and Honor was no exception. I particularly enjoyed the scene where Honor and Colm sword fight shortly after meeting. Although Markaria has female leaders they are rarely warriors so Colm was in for some surprises with Honor. She continued to stay strong and tough throughout the book and never lost her edge just because she had a big, strong man around. Honor is who she is and she maintains that from start to finish.
--Final Thoughts--
Overall, not my favorite in the Phoenix Adventures series but it was still great action romance. The end was particularly poignant and I liked seeing more of Nik and Darc.

Lost in Barbarian Space A Phoenix Adventures Scifi Romance eBook Anna Hackett Reviews
This can be read as a stand-alone, but I really suggest that you read On a Barbarian World before reading this one. It will be the most enjoyable if the series is read in order. This story had everything I love about Ms. Hackett’s books; action, excitement, surprises, humor, and steamy romance! The heroine is a warrior in her own right and she has a few surprises for the hero. The hero is a barbarian, but he proves that there is more to him than just his fighting skill. Characters from other stories make appearances and greatly enrich the story. I loved seeing more of the teenage Lala! Each story in this series features a different couple and they are cliff-hanger free. I love this series and I eagerly await the next story!
A kickass heroine, with a big, badass barbarian with swords, a brilliant space journey, and battling together against space pirates in a hostile, ice moon? I LOVE IT! Every bloody, brilliant moment.
It was like a combination of Winter Fusion (ice planet) with Phoenix Adventures (space) and Hellsquad (scary man-eating creatures!)
And the plot twist that I didn't see coming, which tore my heart as I read through teary-eyed (was that a first among Anna's SFR novels?); I was extremely relieved that in the end, Honor and Colm reached their HEA.
And the nanami continues to interest me. This added, extra bit makes the Barbarian series beautifully unique versus Anna's other worlds/series.
I definitely enjoyed this story but I have to admit that I liked "On a Barbarian World" a smidge better. The two definitely go together though since this story builds from the first one. Colm is a very accomplished Warrior who is tasked with overseeing the Phoenix group looking for the second ship from Earth that they hope holds treasure. Honor is in charge of security for the Phoenix group. I enjoyed watching the two of them dance around each other since neither want to get involved. As per usual there are a lot of twists and turns and suspense that keep the pages turning into the night. It is a rollicking good space adventure that is definitely worth your while. I recommend this book to any sci-fi romance adventure types. I received an ARC for an honest review. Enjoy! 😀
revisit to the location of the book "On a Barbarian World" but could easily be read as a stand-alone.
Based on the artifacts found on the planet Makaria in the last book, an expedition is set up by the Institute of Historical Preservation to investigate the planet for further artifacts. Honor Brandall is the security chief for the expedition and she's very good at her job. On the planet, Colm, the clan's second in command, is assigned to guide and protect the expedition, which is to the planet's two moons. Adventure, danger and treasure await.
Colm and Honor make a good pair. Both are very good at their jobs and have huge protective streaks. I loved them both and read the book in one sitting because I couldn't put it down.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This series never fails to entertain. Strong men finding the women who match them in every way gives me a case of the happies. The fact our hero this time around is a barbarian with a warrior's sense of honor and a secret he's determined to take to his grave only makes it better.
Because tortured men are my crack, amirite?!?!
Honor and Colm are so well matched. I genuinely liked how Honor challenged Colm's beliefs about what women were capable of. As soon as she proves she can hold her own and adapts quickly to the circumstances around her, he gives her room to do her thing. I also loved how he went all ragey when she was threatened. Yup, tortured men with a possessive streak are my literary crack.
Awesome treasure hunting shenanigans, space pirates, steamy moments in dire situations (always fun!), and the Phoenix crew. Being hunted and half freezing to death never sounded so fun!
